I, Brian Bergeron, have entered the world of blogging. It has been a long time coming and I leave in its wake a series of half-filled journals in which with earnest intent I begin writing only to lose interest a few weeks into the venture but I hope this time is charmed.
The reason I have started this blog is because of the quality of blog by a recently made friend of mine: Glenn Yoder of the local band Casavettes (his blog can be found Here . He writes his blog in order to catalogue his band’s history as well as to provide a service to anyone (ahem…someone like me) who would be interested in seeing an independent band be built from the ground up. For me, after all the trials and tribulations that I have dealt with in the last four years and those I continue to deal with, I need something like that now more than ever. It will serve as a way for me to organize my thoughts and hopefully, (fingers crossed) an avenue in which others can read and chime in with their opinions, criticisms, etc.
It is weird how the musician has become so personal and transparent towards his/her potential fanbase. Gone are the days of any mystique towards a musician’s life because the Internet has provided an instantaneous way to learn about and get in touch with one’s favorite musicians and the public want to know every little thing about the musician. I don’t have any fantasies that I am hot stuff or popular in the least and frankly, not many people really care about what I’m doing (yet…well, there are some) but I figured I’d give the world a head start into knowing everything about me…(that was only half serious).
A great example is Jonathan Coulton who for a year wrote and recorded a song a week and posted it on his blog. He would spend 6 hours a day on his computer maintaining his blog and connecting with his fan and he’s making a living doing it. Not a great living mind you…but living I suppose, his own version of the American dream. The New York Times wrote a great article on him and about blogging, My Space and everything Internet that is important to a band and that really helped to motivate me.
I started blogging as well because my memory is terrible. For some reason, I have been able to maintain and organize a career with little organization and for some reason I seem to be damn good remembering contacts and people who I should remember but little details and everything are lost to me. So when I become a bitter, cynical, failed artist, I’ll have this log as a testament to why I was wasting my time! Hooray.
I am incredibly blessed to be twenty-two years old and to be able to play music full-time and pay my bills. I don’t take that for granted in the least. I hope this log will help me sort things out so that I can continue to make my career grow and so that I can provide meaningul reading for people trying to kill time on the Internet, or like Glenn, to provide reading for an Independent musician looking to figure out what the heck is the next step.
I hope most of all that I can write in hear with some consistency…My girlfriend Marie said that writing constantly certainly can’t hurt your writing ability and I hope that it helps…Maybe the next step will be a digital camera and I can take fun and exciting pictures for each blog entry (I don’t do well with cameras). I’m optimistic and I hope you enjoy this too. If not, you can trash it in your VERY OWN BLOG . I think that’s called the ‘circle of life’.
Onwards!
