Falling Behind…
Yikes, I’m all ready falling out of the groove with this blog business, which could be a good thing because I’ve been extremely busy. I think I’m going to be brief too because I’m in super songwriting mode. We’re entering the studio in November and I am trying to write much more new material. I have plenty of songs that I could record, but part of this re-invention or I guess re-assertion with my music, I’m trying to make things much more focused and try to write in a particular style. Still, I think a couple of older songs like “Sisters” and “Cavity” might make the cut. I wrote this sad little ballad last week that I’m really digging on. I think it might make the cut too but I really need to write some upbeat material. It’s always been difficult for me to write upbeat material. When I try, it sounds really forced or disingenuous. There have been some occassions when it works but I think more often than not, I can settle down and right slow songs better.
I’ve also been throwing out a lot of riffs and lyrics that I’ve been composing because it doesn’t fit in the grand scheme of things. I’m going more in the vein of Americana and alt-country, which is definitely the material that’s really getting me going lately but we’ll see how it works.
I’ve been fortunate enough to record two EPs this year and they’ve been extremely different situations. Also, each recording I’ve made has been better than the last, which I’m also proud about. I think this one, however, has to make it. I think the guys who are going to produce it are capable of doing very good work and I think they know the sound that I’m trying to hit. My chief concern right now is completing the material and working on getting it solid with my band. We’ve also been trying out new guitarists and haven’t really hit anything solid yet but I’m optimistic.
I’ll leave the studio mind set for now…
…In other news, I have been competing on this website, OurStage.com where you put your music up for listen and people judge and the best music is supposed to float to the top and you win prizes and stuff. Anyhow, my song “Strangers” is number 7 right now. If we stay in the Top 20 until Thursday, then we’re locked in the top 20. Voting then goes to decide the top spot until I think October 30th. If we make the top spot then a final round of voting goes for the top spots of every category and the ultimate winner get $5000, which would definitely help get some things rolling for the band. I haven’t for one second thought, $5000, maybe I’ll take a vacation . Ha, that money is spoken for in regards to business operations. I’m not thinking about a gameplan until Thursday, when I will go crazy trying to get things rocking on that.
That’s all I have time for right now. Hopefully I can earnestly put some good posting in the next few days!
