The Stage Has Been Set.
I met with Will Dailey today for the first of our pre-production meetings for the new album. It went swimmingly. We got to catch up from his time on the road, talked about future whiffle ball endeavors, (note: ‘whiffle’ doesn’t come up as a misspelling on my spell check…that’s a surprise) and started working through the arrangements of songs for the new album. I now present to you the 10 songs that will probably be on the new album and the 3 songs that could find a way on the album by kicking off other songs:
These songs WILL be tracked:
Anna
Tell My Story
Gracie
Sisters
Glory
Have Heart
Missing
Let Me In
Hanging Around (hasn’t been played before)
“I Promise You Relief (hasn’t been played before)
Songs that are on the bubble
Eventually
Days (has only been debuted at Faneuil Hall)
“Back To The Middle” (never been played before
On My Mind (Will’s choice. I’m not pushing to re-do this one. He will only do it if we, “Lose that Dave Matthews S***)
I’m sure there will be a hail mary, last minute entry into the fold as I always seem to write a song on the eve of the recording that has to be on there (for “The Great Escape EP” it was “Dark Eyes Blue” for the last EP I did with Will it was “Tell My Story” and for “The Glory EP” it was “You Don’t Love Me (At All)”.
We got some good work done today as well. It was good getting a fresh set of ears around the songs. One who respects the songs but is not afraid to turn them upside down. “Anna” has a brand new part, and that song is old. It is tough to make a change to something that is that ingrained but I think it is a mature development (the new part) that ingrains the americana influences and helps contour the EP more. “Hanging Around” has gone through some serious restructuring as well as having a new part that shows a climax of a song that is otherwise fairly consistent in contour. The vocal melody in the chorus of “Missing” has been changed and made higher. We’re re-tooling songs in a way that I haven’t done before.
Other songs have been kept the same. “Gracie”, “Tell My Story”, and “Have Heart” will just get the pro studio treatment with all of the fixings. Not rocket science there.
We updated the studio budget and I was informed that I need to get new frets on my guitar (which have been wore down to the bone). I’m looking forward to the product and what we’ll come up with.
I’ll keep everyone posted. I’m meeting with Will again next week to go over the changes again once I’ve had a chance to ingrain them. The CD has a sound and an aesthetic now, which I’m excited about but much more work is to be done.
