3 Years Gone By

3 years ago, on November 10, 2005, I released “The Closer EP”. It was recorded over a series of days (I frankly don’t remember how many) at Waltz Audio by my friend and former basis Andy Renault. There were five tracks on it, three songs “Speed”, “Time Is On Our Side”, and “Peaks and Valleys” remain in my repertoire, though they’re hanging on by a string.

I don’t know what made me think of it but I can’t believe how far I’ve come in three years. In retrospect, that EP sucked. I think part of it was that Andy had never done serious recording before (no discredit to him) but the main problem was my singing and songwriting. The recordings are uneven and when I listen to them now, I cringe. At the time, it seemed new and wonderful. I hadn’t recorded anything of that quality up until that point, but now, it’s kind of scary.

I can’t wait to see where I am in three years. Hopefully it’s still making music. It will probably be in San Francisco but if not, I hope wherever it is, that I’m happy and am producing worthy material.

So many things have happened since then. I won’t get into all of them but I appreciate all of them (good and bad) and I thank those of you that have shared those times with me.

Here’s to three more!

    Three years?!?! Dang…

Your music/sound/evolution has come along quite nicely over that time. I don’t think i’ve been around for all three of those years…but i’ve certainly seen a progression from the early work to even just the acoustic/demo stuff you’ve been putting up for the new album.

You know, i can’t think of any musician i know that really likes their early work. I’m guilty of it too, though. I used to write really bad lyrics that i wanted to eventually put to music. Now, i’m kind of glad i never did with some of them. About 10% of them are actually decent. Everything else…well..i’ve got a stack of recycling paper.

Not gonna lie, I still listen to “Speed” almost religiously. Just something about that recording of that song.

You’ve evolved a lot, but don’t sell the debut EP too cheap — I personally think it’s far from cringe-worthy.
